What if Chinatown could talk?

Chinatown in Singapore is a rich area filled with hidden gems. Unfortunately, most tourists only frequent the main Pagoda Street. Singapore Tourism Board tasked us to invite tourists to explore beyond the typical tourist traps and discover the real Chinatown.

Interactive video and motion sensing technology brought three characters from 1940’s Chinatown to life.

Interactive video and motion sensing technology brought three characters from 1940’s Chinatown to life.

Our three characters – the Rickshaw Puller, the Street Hawker and the Samsui Woman, were brought to life and acted as tour guides to unsuspecting tourists.

These interactive installations were set up at three of the most crowded areas in Chinatown and would spring to life when a person within a 1-meter radius would walk past. Watch the news clip below to see how it worked.

The results? Over 8,000 maps dispensed, 1,140 hours of engagement, a news feature on TV and 4 Bronze Gong Awards.

More importantly, we increased in foot traffic to all our hidden gems and got tourists to experience the real Chinatown.
